Knowing exactly if and when you ovulate is the single most important fertility information you need to know (in addition to knowing that he has a healthy sperm count).


The Fertile Window:  The trick for every woman who is trying to conceive is to pinpoint her own individual most fertile time because generally a woman’s fertile window is the day of ovulation (usually 12 to 16 days before the menstrual period begins) and the five days preceding it.

For the average woman it occurs somewhere between day 10 and 17.

Signs of Ovulation

  • Rise in basal body temperature, typically 1/2 to 1 degree, measured by a thermometer
  • Higher levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), measured on a home ovulation kit
  • Cervical mucus, or vaginal discharge, may appear clearer, thinner, and stretchy, like raw egg whites
  • Breast tenderness
  • Bloating
  • Light spotting
  • Slight pain or cramping in your side

Ovulation Facts

Your egg lives for up to 24 hours after leaving your ovary, so if you are having sex around your most fertile days, you will have the best chance of conceiving


A man’s sperm can live for up to five days, so it’s a good idea to also have sex before ovulation occurs if you are trying to conceive


Ovulation can be affected by a number of different factors including stress and illness.


The gender of your baby is actually determined from the moment your partner’s sperm meets your egg – if the sperm is carrying a Y chromosome, you’ll have conceived a boy and if it’s an X chromosome, it’ll be a girl.


You can have a period even if you haven’t ovulated and you can ovulate without having a period.
